Have you ever been accused of living a questionable life? No… maybe it’s time you were! I’m obviously not referring to a life filled with sin, immoral activities or shady business deals, but a life that causes and provokes people to ask questions. We are called to live lives that cause gossip in all the right ways.
“Why is she so kind to her neighbours?” or “Why is that fella always helping people?” or “Why does that family always have others at their table?” or “Why are they so generous?” or “How can they face every situation with such peace and calm?”
I’m sure all of us can think of a grumpy, selfish or rude Christian, but it’s pretty obvious that kind of witness will never inspire people to explore the God they represent. NO! We’re to love others, be an example in society, be authentic, forgiving, compassionate, holy and humble. We’re to display love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control as the Holy Spirit endows us.
Perhaps the most inspiring and challenging Scripture of all is: “Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6). Something we should remind ourselves of regularly is that we are the Body of Christ, the physical representatives of Jesus in this world.
“Live wisely among those who are not believers and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone” Colossians 4:5–6 (NLT)
So as you begin to apply this simple but difficult principle, ask the Holy Spirit every day to empower you! Pray something like this:
Holy Spirit please empower me to live a life worthy of my calling. Help me to display evidence of Your work in my life and lead me to act and react in every situation with wisdom and grace. Cause me to love, serve and inspire those around me, and above all, empower me to imitate Jesus that I might bring glory to Him. Amen
