Jeremiah 18:3-4, says, So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.
Jeremiah was told to go to the potter’s house, where he observed that something was being made at the wheel. As the potter was shaping the clay, it became marred/flawed in the potter’s hand, so the potter made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.
This is a vivid picture of God restoring lives. The potter could have easily thrown the clay away and started with a new piece, but He is committed to working with the clay in hand. In fact, Jer. 18: 6 declares, The LORD said. “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel!
God is likening Himself to the potter and us, His people, as the clay. We have a hands-on God, a God who is not distant but up close. A God who does not give up, a God whose hands are outstretched towards you, inviting you to intimacy but whose hands are also on you, shaping you, helping you, encouraging you, moulding you, making your life into something beautiful, His design and purpose. God has His hand on you and is working deep in you.
I sense there are those who need to be reminded today that you are in God’s hands. Allow that truth to comfort you in whatever season of life you might currently be in. It is God who has the final say over your life.
The word of God assures us that the Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands. Psalm (138:8). Paul affirms this by saying, You can be confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; (Phi 1:6 NKJ).
At all times the potter who is working with the clay, has a plan in mind, the potter knows what He’s doing and what He wants to make. At all the times our Father has a plan in mind, He has a purpose, He sees what you will be, He knows what parts need reshaped. He knows the blemished bits that need reworking. He knows all about us and is invested in us and He has His hands on you today. Be blessed with this truth.
Heavenly Father, we worship You and thank You for Your hands on our lives. You are the Potter, and we are the clay. Lord, shape us and assure us of Your hand in our every moment. You are perfect, Father, and You do all things perfectly. Continue to perfect that which concerns me, and may it bring glory, honour and praise to Your Name.
